This 3-day course workshop integrates design thinking approaches with environmental sustainability and follows a participatory, cross-institutional and interdisciplinary approach. While outlining the programme, great emphasis is laid on participants’ interaction: besides face-to-face lectures, group works and case studies, field visits to existing projects and role-plays reveal creativity and make participants think in a holistic way.

The goal of this workshop is to practice the application of design thinking methods and tools for selected environmental issues and activate a change in the development of solutions. The course will empower participants to conduct a creative, needs-based ideation process for environmental business ideas. The focus within the environmental sector lies in the area of water, sanitation and waste.

In collaboration with An-Najah National University, we have the pleasure to offer an exclusive opportunity for lecturers from engineering and business departments to get to know the course and offer a course to students in January 2019 in Nablus. The overall aim is to introduce lecturers to the course and support them in using the course material with their students. The offer thus includes a one-day introduction for lecturers and a 4-days course for students.

The course “Resource Recovery and Reuse (RRR) Entrepreneurship” will enable engineering students to:

• Identify business opportunities for resource recovery and reuse across the waste and sanitation sectors,
• Develop a RRR business model,
• Study the feasibility of RRR business models by analysing legal, institutional, technological, logistical, health and financial aspects and related risks,
• Define market positioning and financing for the implementation of RRR business models.

The course was developed by researchers at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and business development experts at cewas (coaching entrepreneurs in water and sanitation). The modules draw on innovative business models examples from the IWMI publication Resource Recovery from Waste. Business Models for Energy, Nutrient and Water Reuse in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. The focus is on organic municipal, agro-industrial and food waste, wastewater and faecal sludge, supporting a diverse range of business models with potential for large-scale out- and up-scaling.

The University of Balamand, Issam Fares Faculty of Technology and cewas Middle East, the international centre for water management services, are proud to offer a 3-day Workshop in Sanitation Systems and Technologies based on the Compendium of Sanitation Systems and Technologies of the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag). The compendium appeared for the first time in 2008, offering a systematic overview on different sanitation systems and technologies, and describing a wide range of available tried and tested sanitation technologies. This structured source of information has become a key and useful planning tool for making more informed decisions in the sanitation sector and is also available in French and Arabic.

The ToT Workshop on Sanitation Systems and Technologies has been conceived based on the Sustainable Sanitation and Water Management (SSWM) training, which has been successfully taken by more than 650 participants in Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, including the Middle East. The training builds on the SSWM Toolbox (www.sswm.info) that provides practitioners with tools for the planning and implementation of sustainable sanitation systems at local level.

Aimed at strengthening the capacity of (Syrian) key WASH organizations in the provision of basic sanitation and resource management with a special focus on emergency response, this training provides the theoretical knowledge about the topic for its participants and provides them with a list of possible sanitation and water management solutions for different scenarios.
