cewas and its partner BORDA-WesCA (The Bremen Overseas Research and DevelopmentAssociation’s West and Central Asia Regional Office),has offered a newly developed in-person training on Faecal Sludge Management (FSM). The 5-day training was held in Erbil, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, in mid-November 2021.This training was particularly designed for 4-5 member teams of professionals working with municipalities or governmental offices, non-governmental organisations and civil society groups or private sector organisations dealing with FSM and sanitation issues.This training was designed to support participants in conceptualising a local FSM intervention. It uniquely incorporated theoretical learning and hands-on application of contents to participants’ real-life FSM project ideas.The training aimed to activate a change towards a holistic and participatory approach in the planning and implementation of FSM interventions. The trainings empowered participants, who acquired relevant tools for performing a stakeholder analysis, identifying problems faced by the population in the target area, defining the elements of a logical project framework, conceptualising a FSM system, addressing elements of an enablingFSM environment, creating an action plan for project-related activities, and effectively presenting and communicating training results.
